ECHOES is a structured international clinical placement programme on Pemba Island, designed with clear learning outcomes, named local mentors, and documentation to support review by home institutions.
Built for review as a clinical placement
ECHOES was designed from the outset as a structured clinical placement rather than an informal travel experience. Each placement is built around defined learning outcomes, designated local mentors, and documentation that can be reviewed by placement offices, academic coordinators, and course leads.
When students seek institutional recognition of the placement, we ask them to attach confirmation that they are enrolled in a relevant study programme that meets our academic and insurance requirements.

See the six core learning outcomes
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Each placement is structured around six core learning outcomes, with additional discipline-specific objectives for each clinical track, so institutions can see what students are expected to observe, practise, reflect on, and complete during their time on placement.
Supervision and scope of practice
Each student is paired with a designated local clinical mentor and works within their level of training and agreed scope of practice. Supervision is structured, explicit, and part of the placement model from the start.
Hospital and placement setting
Placements are based at a busy district hospital on Pemba Island, where students learn through routine clinical work across a range of departments and services.
In addition, students will accompany community health workers on outreach activities, gaining insight into primary care and community-level health promotion.
Safety and welfare
Before the placement begins, students receive structured pre-departure guidance, clear points of contact, and a list of the insurance cover they must hold. In-country support continues throughout the placement.

To make this work, we ask that you share your institution's placement requirements and review process with us, and recommend the programme to students who are a good fit. In return, we provide the supervision overview, learning outcomes, and placement documentation needed for institutional review - aligned with your requirements wherever possible.
