ECHOES is a structured international clinical placement programme based on Pemba Island, Zanzibar. During an ECHOES placement, you become part of a local care team by rotating through different wards at Vitongoji District Hospital, being assigned to a local mentor, participating in community health work alongside community health workers, and completing a practical project that stays behind for the next cohort to build on.ECHOES is named after the kind of work it offers: equity‑minded, capability‑building healthcare delivered through on‑site, supervised educational placements. The name reflects that each cohort’s work “echoes” in the host health system after they leave. The core idea of ECHOES is simple: what you contribute continues after you leave.
The ECHOES placement takes place on Pemba Island, Zanzibar, based at Vitongoji District Hospital and in nearby communities where you join local teams in both clinical and community health work.Pemba is the northern island in the archipelago of Zanzibar. It is a green, semi-rural island in the Indian Ocean, with winding village paths, coastal clinics, and a close-knit health community. It is a place where you get to know both the hospital and everyday life on the island.
Placements are 4, 8, or 12 weeks, depending on your home institution's requirements. The structure and rules are the same for all lengths; longer placements allow for more rotations, more community work, and deeper work on the project. If you have questions about other placement lengths, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the ECHOES team.
ECHOES is for students in medicine, nursing, midwifery, and dentistry who want a structured, supervised global health placement where both learning and contribution matter. It is aimed at students in their clinical years who are ready to take part in day‑to‑day patient care within their scope of practice.ECHOES might be a good fit if you are curious about how healthcare works in a semi‑rural, low‑resource setting, eager to learn, open-minded, adaptable, and willing to engage respectfully with local communities and clinical teams. We aim to offer a placement where you can grow your clinical skills and feel that what you do is genuinely useful to the health system that hosts you.
Most placements end when the student flies home. ECHOES is designed so the work continues. Each cohort inherits a practice question from the previous group, adds to it during their placement, and hands it on. Part of every cohort fee is reinvested into the local health system to support community health workers, mentors, and community activities.Students are integrated into day‑to‑day hospital and community work within their scope of practice, guided by local mentors and community health workers. The placement is structured so that you are not just “visiting” a low‑resource setting, but joining a longer shared effort to strengthen care in one place over time. The aim is for you to leave with new skills and perspectives, while the hospital and communities retain something concrete that your cohort helped build.
